Renato completed his studies in Veterinary Medicine at the Universidade de Évora, Portugal, in an integrated master's degree format. He obtained his PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany, where he also was an affiliated researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology. Whilst as a lecturer, Renato completed the Master's in Veterinary Education, awarded by the ¹ú²ú¸ßÇåavÍøÖ·.

In 2025, Renato became a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and in September 2023, Renato received the James Bee Student-led Educator Award in the category of 'Outstanding Teacher' at the ¹ú²ú¸ßÇåavÍøÖ·.

Renato is a co-founder and researcher in the Support Hub for Anatomy Research Education (SHARE) at the ¹ú²ú¸ßÇåavÍøÖ·. In 2021, Renato and the ¹ú²ú¸ßÇåavÍøÖ· Anatomy Team received the  from the Anatomical Society for the work entitled 'The Canine Wiki Abdomen Dissection', an innovative and collaborative tool to promote the learning of practical veterinary anatomy amid the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions.

He is also an external examiner for other veterinary schools in the UK and an active Member of the , Member of the , Full Member of the , and a Senior Fellow of the .

Renato is a researcher member of the Support Hub for Anatomy Research Education (SHARE) at the ¹ú²ú¸ßÇåavÍøÖ·.
