The ¹ú²ú¸ßÇåavÍøÖ·’s (¹ú²ú¸ßÇåavÍøÖ·) Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital (BSAH), based in Camden, has received accreditation for Dogs Trust’s Dog Friendly Clinic Scheme. It is the only vet practice in the Camden Town, King’s Cross and St Pancras areas with this award, (run in partnership with the British Veterinary Behaviour Association), which helps ensure dogs and their owners experience the most comfortable and best possible veterinary care experience.

Treating more than 2,600 dogs each year, the BSAH team has seen first-hand how anxious dogs, and their owners, can be when visiting their vets. Ensuring all patients and their owners feel as at ease as possible, and have a trusted client-clinic bond, the team offers several support options, including dog-only waiting rooms and wards, “happy visits” to the practice, food rewards and enrichment activities for patients.

This accreditation builds on these efforts, helping practice staff gain access to additional skills and resources specifically aimed at recognising and addressing early signs of anxiety and improve dog welfare while at the Hospital. It also supports owners in preparing their pets ahead of visits to the vet.

Furthering the BSAH’s commitment to being a Dog Friendly clinic, and ensuring dogs have the best start in life, the clinic also now hosts behaviourist-led puppy classes. Delivered by clinical animal behaviouralist, Antonella Marsicano, these science-based classes help puppies develop vital socialisation and life skills while teaching owners to read canine body language and support puppies to become confident, well-adjusted family dogs.

By repeatedly visiting the BSAH for training, puppies will also develop positive associations with a veterinary environment, making essential future visits to the vet less stressful for the dogs and their owners.

Dr Katharine Nelson, Director of General Practice at the ¹ú²ú¸ßÇåavÍøÖ·, said:

“I am so proud that the Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital has been recognised by the Dogs Trust as a Dog Friendly Clinic. Making sure that dogs and their owners have a stress-free experience whenever they visit is of paramount importance to our team.

“Helping dogs become well-adjusted, resilient members of the family is so important for dog welfare and family relationships, so we are delighted to work with accredited veterinary and non-veterinary behaviourists to provide high quality puppy classes and assistance with problem behaviours at our practice.”

Dr Rachel Casey, Director of Strategy and Transformation at Dogs Trust, said:

“Veterinary care is an essential part of dogs’ lives, but some find visits to the vets stressful. We are very pleased to collaborate with the BVBA to create the Dog Friendly Clinic scheme to help veterinary practices embed the principles of behavioural medicine into clinic life.

“Vet clinics are at the forefront of recognising and preventing the development of problem behaviours in dogs, and this scheme will help them develop the skills and knowledge to optimise the wellbeing of the dogs in their care.”

Chris Laurence, Chair of the British Veterinary Behaviour Association, said:

“Encouraging welfare-friendly treatment of dogs in veterinary practices is one of our primary objectives so every additional practice means many more dogs will benefit.

“We’re delighted that the ¹ú²ú¸ßÇåavÍøÖ· Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital has joined our dog friendly community. By doing so, they are helping ensure every dog has as positive an experience as possible within their clinic.”
